Graphics cards used to be scary things that cost hundreds of pounds, but over the last few years prices of mid-range cards have dropped quite sharply. This Asus EN9600 GSO card is a case in point: it's not a high-end device but it will work happily with most recent games at high detail settings.

It uses the Nvidia 9600 GSO chipset and has 512MB of memory, making it suitable for most gaming and, of course, for desktop tasks such as video editing. It has two DVI outputs so it can be connected to one or two desktop monitors or even (using an adaptor) a flat-panel television. At just over £37 it won't break the bank either, making it an excellent inexpensive upgrade for most desktop computers.
